If you’ve been a victim of Identity theft, or are worried you might become one, it could be worth password-protecting your credit report.
Doing this means that in order for a company to carry out a search on you they'll need to know the password that you've set. Credit reference agencies do this by adding a special Notice of Correction (NoC) known as a password NoC.
If you’d like to get this added, you’ll need to raise a dispute with Equifax. When raising your dispute, you’ll need to select the option ‘I’d like to add/remove a notice of correction on my report’.
You can use the below template to assist you:
“I, (name) have reason to believe that my personal details may be used fraudulently in an attempt to obtain credit. I would ask any companies searching my credit information with Equifax to ask for the password in order to confirm my identity.”
Because not all lenders use Equifax, we’d also recommend getting in touch with Experian and TransUnion to get these added with them.
